Today is a very special day! Everyone please join me in wishing our only niece, Cassie, a very happy FIRST birthday!
Today also happens to be Rare disease day, a day dedicated to raising awareness for warriors like our niece, Cassie. At just 7 months old, Cassie was diagnosed with Krabbe Disease, a rare and devastating genetic disorder.
Around 4 months of age, Cassie started showing symptoms that concerned her parents—developmental delays, muscle weakness, and other unexplained issues. Rachel and Josh tirelessly advocated for answers, and after countless appointments, tests, and sleepless nights, they received the heartbreaking diagnosis: Krabbe Disease.
Children with Krabbe Disease experience a rapid deterioration of motor skills and cognitive abilities as the disease progresses. The life expectancy for children diagnosed with infantile-onset Krabbe Disease is typically around two years. While nothing can prepare any family for such an impossible diagnosis, Rachel and Josh have shown incredible strength and resilience, facing this unimaginable journey.
